A systematic risk management plan for the integrated planning of production and transportation exists today only to a limited degree. For this reason, the potentials of shifting shipments from road carriers to rail carriers made possible through integration could not be utilized entirely to date. As a result, a high percentage of standard shipments are handled by trucks, a flexible means of transportation. Therefore, a more professional handling of risks in the supply chain and the development of appropriate measures for supply chain oriented risk assessment are essential in order to leverage the potentials of an integrated planning of production and transportation. The members of the InKoRISK project, under the consortium leadership of Volkswagen AG, include the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics, 4flow AG, Schenker AG and Continental. The participants are working together to create risk transparency as well as suitable proactive and reactive measures to minimize risk occurrence or risk implications. 15 well-known European companies from the retail and consumer goods industry have joined together in this ECR Inventory Optimization project to identify new approaches on how to collaboratively decrease inventory levels in supply chains. Companies such as ASDA, Barilla, Carrefour, Colgate-Palmolive, Henkel, Johnson & Johnson, Kraft Foods, L’Oréal, Metro, Nestlé, Procter & Gamble, Sainsbury and Unilever are taking part in this project, which is part of the Efficient Consumer Response (ECR) Europe initiative. Inconsistent patterns make predicting customer demand and having the right articles available exactly at the right place at the right time a constant challenge in the retail industry. Excess inventory levels, however, reduce the company’s cash flow and gross profit margin. The project’s main focus is on developing new inventory strategies for overcoming the traditional unilateral approach in order to guarantee on-shelf availability at the point of sale, maintain speed to shelf and high availability rates as well as keep inventory to a minimum.

The initial project phase entails developing collaborative inventory optimization strategies and assessing their feasibility. Based on proven expertise in innovative logistics and SCM solutions, 4flow, as an independent project participant, has identified the major inventory drivers in the supply chains of the companies involved. Based on the insights acquired in the course of the first phase, feasible approaches will be deduced for inventory optimization that take the organization, processes, physical materials distribution and IT infrastructures into consideration. This phase will result in new concepts for cross-company inventory optimization as well as guidelines for implementing a collaborative approach from which both the supplier and the retailer can benefit equally. Catastrophes, whether natural disasters or terrorist attacks, have serious repercussions on the population and infrastructures as a whole. The ability to professionally handle and respond to such risks is crucial for a highly networked economy such as Germany, which is heavily dependent on its road transport infrastructure and logistics hubs like the Port of Hamburg. Scientists from the Technical University in Berlin and the Institute for Technology in Karlsruhe are working closely with logistics experts from 4flow AG and Kühne + Nagel (AG & Co.) KG to analyze the extent to which catastrophes can impact logistics systems in their collaborative project entitled “Risk Management Strategies in Logistics and Infrastructure Networks”.

A complete infrastructure failure could hinder the supply of necessary goods and services and paralyze production, which, for example, was exactly the case when all Rhine navigation was suspended in January, 2011. The research project aims to explore the following issues in greater detail: What specific repercussions could be the result of such catastrophes and how can we deal with them? How should logistics systems be constructed so that they are best equipped against catastrophes? What measures could and should the government take to be able to ensure that the necessary supplies reach the overall population and businesses? Read the whole press release here.
